- Rubber estate workers in New Ambadi, India
January 2010:

Rubber estate workers in New Ambadi, India, recently issued details of the fair trade premiums paid to them by Fair Deal Trading (and its partners) for the latex used in the manufacture of fair trade Ethletic footwear, footballs, mattresses, pillows, and condoms.
Over €50,000 in premiums have been paid and used to set up an insurance policy with pension benefits for all 185 workers engaged in this project giving them security and financial cover they would otherwise not have.
The fair trade premium is paid in addition to the value of the rubber and is paid in to a fund that is managed by a joint body (an elected collective of workers and representatives from the estate management). In similar projects elsewhere, workers have used their premiums towards the construction of a school, to pay for medical care, or provision a safe communal drinking water supply.
The common feature regarding all the premiums are that it is fixed per unit of goods purchased and paid in to the account of the joint body. The fund is managed by the recipients themselves to be spent on things they decide are most important. Each sale of ETHLETIC products includes a payment towards these premiums and so thanks to every customer for playing their part and making the choice. The same system applies, of course, to the Fairly Traded cotton used in particular in the manufacturing the ETHLETIC sneakers
Forget the cynics, ETHLETIC, customers do make a difference. In the grand scheme of things, our volumes are small, but the direct consequences very real and very important. Keep dancing!
